Specifying a bathroom that installs cleanly

Most bathroom delays come from fixture and rough-in mismatches discovered after the walls are closed. Confirm the set-out for wall-faced pans, the mixer body depth against the wall build-up, and the vanity waste position before the plumber roughs in. Buying the fixtures early — even if they sit in the garage — is almost always cheaper than reworking plumbing.

WELS ratings and compliance

Tapware, showers and toilets sold in Australia must carry a WELS water efficiency rating, and all plumbing products must be WaterMark certified for legal installation. Everything we stock in this category meets both. It matters at handover — a certifier can require replacement of non-compliant fixtures.

Finishes

Chrome remains the most durable and forgiving finish. Matt black and brushed finishes have become the default on renovation work but are more sensitive to cleaning products; abrasive or acidic cleaners will damage the coating. Keep finishes consistent across the room, and buy the full set at once — batch variation between brushed finishes is real.

Sequencing the trades

A bathroom runs through demolition, rough-in, waterproofing, screed, tiling, fit-off and silicone, and each stage depends on decisions made earlier. The waterproofer needs the penetrations final; the tiler needs the falls right; the plumber fitting off needs the wall build-up to match what the mixer allows. Lock the fixture selection before rough-in and the rest of the programme becomes straightforward.
