Vanities buying guide
Wall-hung and noggings
Wall-hung vanities need solid blocking in the wall at the right height, installed before lining. Retrofitting support into a finished wall means opening it up. Confirm the fixing height from the vanity data sheet during framing, and make the nogging wider than you think you need — a 100mm error in the vanity model changes the fixing position.
Waste position and drawers
Vanities with drawers rather than a cupboard need the waste and water connections positioned to clear the drawer boxes, which usually means moving them low and to one side. This is decided at rough-in. A drawer unit installed over a centrally positioned waste ends up with the top drawer cut out or non-functional, which is the most common vanity installation complaint.
Materials and moisture
Bathroom cabinetry lives in a humid environment with water contact at the top and around the base. Moisture-resistant board with fully sealed edges is the minimum; two-pack polyurethane and thermally fused finishes hold up better than laminate at the edges. Wall-hung units keep the carcass off the floor entirely, which removes the most common swelling point.
Load and fixing
A wall-hung vanity with a stone top carries substantial weight, and people lean on them. Fix through the carcass into solid noggings with fixings rated for the load, at every fixing point the manufacturer provides — not just the two that are easy to reach. On a masonry wall use proper masonry anchors at the correct embedment, and never rely on plasterboard anchors under any circumstances.
Frequently asked questions
- Do vanities come with the top and basin?
- Depends on the model — some are supplied as a complete unit, others as a cabinet with the top selected separately. Check the listing or call the store.
- Can a wall-hung vanity be fixed to plasterboard?
- No. It must be fixed into studs or purpose-installed noggings behind the sheet.
- What height should a vanity be installed at?
- Typically 800 to 900mm to the top of the benchtop, but it is worth setting it to suit the household rather than defaulting.
