Cleaning down before coating

Every membrane, adhesive and coating failure traces back to a contaminated substrate more often than to the product. Sweeping and vacuuming properly before priming is the cheapest quality control step on any job, and it takes minutes against the cost of a delaminated coating.

Broom selection

Stiff yard brooms move rubble and coarse debris but skate over fine dust. Soft brooms pick up fine material but bend under anything heavier. Sweep coarse first with a stiff broom, then fine with a soft one — and for anything about to be coated, finish with a vacuum, because sweeping alone leaves a fine dust layer that will kill adhesion.

Squeegees and water removal

After washing down a slab, a squeegee removes standing water far faster than waiting for evaporation and gets the surface to the saturated surface-dry condition many products require. Rubber blades wear and tear — a nicked blade leaves lines of water behind and should be replaced rather than persevered with.

Dust suppression

Dry sweeping a slab covered in cement and silica dust puts all of it into the air. Damp the surface lightly before sweeping, or use a vacuum with the right filter class. This is both a health measure and a practical one — airborne dust settles straight back onto the surface you just cleaned.
