Wall or hob mounted

Wall-mounted spouts keep the bath rim clear and are easier to clean around, with no junction on the horizontal surface to collect water. Hob-mounted suits baths set into a tiled surround and gives more flexibility on positioning after rough-in, since the hole can be located once the surround is built.

Flow rate and fill time

Spout bore and the supply pipe size determine how long a bath takes to fill. A narrow spout on a large freestanding bath can take a frustratingly long time. Where fill time matters, check the flow rate and ensure the supply is adequately sized — a high-flow spout on undersized pipework will not deliver its rated flow.

Sealing hob-mounted spouts

A hob-mounted spout penetrates a horizontal tiled surface that gets wet constantly, which makes it a genuine leak risk. The penetration must be sealed through the waterproofing membrane, and the spout bedded on neutral cure silicone at the tile face. Water entering an unsealed hob penetration ends up in the bath surround where it cannot be seen until damage is done.

Air gap and compliance

Australian plumbing requirements call for an air gap between an outlet and the flood level of the fixture, preventing contaminated water being drawn back into the supply. A spout set too low over a bath or basin can breach this. It is the plumber's responsibility to confirm, but it is worth knowing when positioning a spout at the design stage.
