Rough-in for shower stations

Twin systems need the diverter and both outlets set out accurately before lining. Get the manufacturer's rough-in drawing to the plumber early — these are far less forgiving than a single outlet, and the overhead arm position in particular cannot be adjusted once tiled.

Diverters and flow

A diverter switches flow between the overhead and the handheld, and on most systems only one runs at a time. Where a client expects both simultaneously, that requires a system specifically rated for it and adequate flow to supply both — otherwise each performs poorly. Clarify this expectation before ordering, because it is a common source of disappointment at handover.

Exposed versus concealed

Exposed shower stations mount on the tiled wall face and are far simpler to install and service, needing only a single outlet. Concealed systems bury the body in the wall for a minimal look, but require accurate rough-in, correct depth setting against the finished wall, and consideration of how it will ever be serviced. On renovations, exposed is usually the pragmatic choice.

Thermostatic control

Thermostatic mixers hold a set temperature regardless of pressure fluctuations elsewhere in the house, which matters where a toilet flushing currently causes a scalding surprise. They cost more and require adequate and reasonably balanced hot and cold supply. In households with children or elderly occupants, they are worth specifying alongside the tempering valve required by regulation.
