Packing correctly

Pack at fixing points, not between them, so the load transfers through the packer into the substrate. Plastic packers do not compress or rot the way timber offcuts do, which matters where the packing is permanent and hidden behind a finished surface. Packing away from the fixing point lets the frame flex and eventually distorts it.

Glazing packers

Glass must sit on setting blocks of the correct material and hardness, positioned at the points the glazing system specifies — usually at quarter points rather than at the corners. Packing glass at the corners concentrates load on the most vulnerable part of the pane and is a common cause of spontaneous cracking weeks later.

Horseshoe versus flat packers

Horseshoe packers slot around a fixing without needing to be threaded over it, which makes adjusting a frame far quicker. Flat packers are used where the packing must be continuous. Both come in graduated thicknesses and colours so the size is identifiable at a glance — worth using systematically rather than mixing random offcuts.

Material choice

Use UV-stable plastic packers anywhere they remain visible or exposed. Standard packers left in sun become brittle and crumble, which drops the frame they were supporting. Never use timber offcuts in a wet location — they swell, rot and lose their thickness, taking the alignment with them.

Common questions

Should packers be removed after fixing?

Only if the fixing carries the load without them. Permanent packers at fixing points are normal practice for frames and sills.

Can I use timber offcuts as packers?

Not in wet or external locations. Timber swells and rots, and the alignment goes with it.
