Membrane bandage at junctions

Every floor-to-wall junction, internal and external corner, penetration and construction joint needs reinforcing bandage bedded into the wet first coat of membrane. The bandage carries movement across the junction so the membrane does not have to stretch at its weakest point. Work it in fully — a bandage floating in a void does nothing. Air bubbles under the bandage are a defect, not a cosmetic issue, and they will show up at flood test.

Alkali-resistant mesh in render

Render mesh must be alkali resistant; ordinary fibreglass degrades in the high-pH cement matrix and loses strength within a few years. Lap adjacent sheets by at least 100mm and embed the mesh in the outer third of the base coat, not against the substrate, where it does nothing to control surface cracking.

Corner and penetration detailing

Preformed corner pieces are worth using in place of folded bandage at internal and external corners. Folding a flat bandage into a three-dimensional corner always leaves a pleat, and that pleat is a void the membrane cannot fill properly. Preformed pieces sit flat, take the membrane evenly, and remove the most common source of leaks at the shower hob and floor-wall junction. The same applies at pipe penetrations, where preformed collars beat wrapping tape every time.

Bedding technique

Lay the bandage into wet membrane, then immediately apply a second pass of membrane over the top so the fabric is fully saturated and encapsulated. The correct finished appearance is a bandage that has disappeared into the coating, not one whose weave is still visible. Work from the centre outwards with a brush or roller to push air out to the edges rather than trapping it in the middle.

Can I use render mesh as waterproofing bandage?
No. They are different materials for different jobs. Use the bandage specified by the membrane manufacturer.
How wide should bandage be at a floor-wall junction?
Typically 100mm to 150mm, centred on the junction so it runs equally up the wall and across the floor. Check the specific system requirement.
Do I need mesh over the whole render area?
Full-area mesh is standard on lightweight and sheet substrates. On solid masonry, mesh is often only required over sheet joints, at openings and diagonally at window and door corners.
