Nap length and membranes

Nap length controls how much product the roller carries and how it lays off. Short nap gives a smooth finish on flat surfaces; longer nap carries more material and reaches into texture. Waterproofing membranes generally want a medium nap and a solvent-resistant core — a standard paint roller can disintegrate in a solvent-based membrane and shed fibres into the film.

Frames and poles

A roller frame with a proper cage and a five-wire or better construction keeps the cover running true and stops it wandering off the frame under load. Threaded frames take an extension pole, which is not just for high work — a pole gives better leverage and a more even pressure on floors, which matters when building membrane film thickness consistently.

Loading and laying off

Load the roller evenly by rolling it out on the tray ramp or in a bucket grid rather than dunking it. An overloaded roller drips and applies unevenly; an underloaded one leaves a thin, stippled film. Apply in a W or N pattern to distribute material, then lay off in one direction with light pressure. On membranes, always cross-roll the second coat at right angles to the first.

Buckets versus trays

For volume work a bucket and grid beats a tray — it holds far more product, is more stable on a floor, and the grid loads the roller more evenly than a ramp. Trays remain useful for small areas and for cutting in alongside brush work. Either way, use a liner so the container can be reused.

Frequently asked questions

Can I reuse a membrane roller?
Rarely worth it. Once membrane cures in the nap the roller is finished. Treat them as consumables and price them into the job.
What nap for a smooth wall?
Short nap, typically around 10mm, for a smooth finish on flat plasterboard or render.
Why is my roller leaving fibres in the coating?
Either a cheap cover shedding, or a cover not compatible with the solvent in the product. Pre-wash new covers and use solvent-resistant covers with solvent-based products.
