Levelling systems for large format

Above about 600mm, spacers alone will not control lippage — small variations in adhesive bed show up as a visible edge. Clip and wedge levelling systems pull adjacent tiles into plane while the adhesive cures. They add cost and time per square metre but on large-format porcelain they are the difference between a flat floor and a callback.

Cross spacers versus T-spacers

Cross spacers work for a standard grid layout but cannot be used on a brick or offset pattern, where the joints do not intersect in fours. T-spacers handle offset layouts properly. On any offset bond, remember that large-format tile with a 50 percent offset amplifies any bow in the tile into visible lippage at the centre of each neighbour — a one-third offset is far more forgiving.

Removing spacers at the right time

Spacers left in place until the adhesive is hard become very difficult to remove and often chip the tile edge on the way out. Take them out once the adhesive has set enough to hold the tile but before it fully cures. Never grout over a spacer left in the joint — the joint will be shallow at that point and will crack out.

Reusable versus disposable

Standard spacers are cheap enough to treat as consumables, but levelling system bases are single-use while the caps or wedges are generally reusable. Factor the base cost into the square metre rate rather than being surprised by it — on a large floor it is a meaningful line item, and running short mid-job is worse than over-ordering.

Frequently asked questions

What joint width should I use?
Rectified porcelain can go to 2 to 3mm; pressed tile with size variation needs 3 to 5mm to absorb it. Wider joints also give the floor more capacity to accommodate movement.
Do I need a levelling system for 600x600 tiles?
Not always, on a flat substrate with a competent tiler. Above 600mm, or on any floor with known flatness issues, it is strongly worth using.
Can I tile with no grout joint at all?
No. Butt-jointed tile has nowhere to accommodate size variation or movement and will chip and tent. Even rectified tile needs a minimum joint.
