Mallets buying guide

White rubber for light surfaces

Black rubber mallets mark light-coloured tile and stone, leaving grey streaks that can be very difficult to remove from a textured surface. Use a white or non-marking rubber head on anything pale, and test on an offcut before working across a finished floor.

Bedding tile without cracking it

Tap tiles at the centre and work outward, using controlled taps rather than heavy blows. Striking near an edge or corner concentrates force on an unsupported point and cracks tile — often invisibly, so it fails weeks later under traffic. If a tile will not bed with moderate tapping, the adhesive bed is wrong and more force will not fix it.

Dead blow mallets

The shot filling in a dead blow head absorbs rebound, so the energy goes into the work rather than bouncing back. This gives much better control when bedding tile and pavers, and reduces fatigue over a long day of laying. It also reduces the chance of an uncontrolled second strike from rebound.

Handle condition

Check handles regularly, particularly on hammers with timber handles that have been left in sun or wet. A loose or cracked head is a serious hazard, and a head coming off mid-swing on a site is dangerous to everyone nearby. Fibreglass and composite handles hold up better in site conditions than timber.

Frequently asked questions

Why use a dead blow mallet?
The shot filling absorbs rebound, so the force goes into the work rather than bouncing back. It gives more control when bedding tile without cracking it.
How do I remove black rubber marks from tile?
A solvent-based cleaner or a melamine pad usually works on a smooth glaze. On textured tile it can be very difficult, which is why a white mallet is worth using in the first place.
