Bristle type

Synthetic filament is the right choice for water-based paints and membranes — natural bristle absorbs water, swells and goes limp. Natural bristle still holds an advantage in solvent-based enamels and oils, where it lays off more smoothly. For membrane and primer work, use a cheap disposable brush and throw it out rather than trying to clean cured product from good bristles.

Cutting in

An angled sash brush gives far more control on a cut line than a square-cut brush, because the tip can be loaded and steered precisely. Load only the bottom third of the bristles, tap off rather than scraping on the tin rim, and cut in one continuous stroke where possible. Stopping and restarting mid-line is what produces the visible ridge along a ceiling edge.

Brush size

Bigger is not faster past a point. A brush too large for the hand becomes tiring and less controlled, and a 100mm brush loaded with paint is heavy over a full day. For most trade work, a 50mm to 63mm angled brush covers cutting in, with a 75mm or 100mm for larger flat areas that do not justify a roller.

Cleaning and keeping shape

Clean brushes immediately after use in the appropriate solvent or water, working the cleaner right up into the ferrule where paint accumulates and hardens. Paint left in the ferrule spreads the bristles permanently. Reshape the tip, wrap in the original keeper or paper, and store hanging or flat — never standing on the bristles.

How do I keep a brush usable between coats?
Wrap it tightly in plastic or suspend it in the appropriate solvent or water. Do not leave it standing on its bristles in a tin, which deforms the tip permanently.
Can I use the same brush for water and solvent-based products?
Technically yes with thorough cleaning, but in practice keep separate brushes. Residue carries across and can affect the finish.
Why is my brush leaving streaks?
Usually overloading, working paint that has started to set, or a brush that has lost its shape. Load lightly and lay off in one direction.
