PVC versus metal profiles

PVC will not corrode, stain or bleed rust through a finish, which makes it the safer choice in wet and coastal environments. It is also more forgiving to cut and mitre on site. The trade-off is impact resistance — a PVC arris will take a knock less well than aluminium, so on high-traffic corners at ground level metal is usually still the better call.

Thermal movement

PVC has a higher coefficient of expansion than metal. On long external runs in direct sun, leave expansion gaps at joints and avoid fixing rigidly at both ends of a length, or the profile will bow. Dark-coloured PVC in full sun moves more and can soften at high surface temperatures, so light colours are preferable on exposed elevations.

UV stability

Not all PVC is UV stabilised. Standard grades left exposed will chalk, discolour and become brittle within a few years of Sydney sun. For profiles that stay visible, specify a UV-stabilised grade. Where the bead is fully encapsulated in render, UV performance matters far less and the standard grade is adequate.

Fixing into render systems

PVC beads have perforated flanges that key into the base coat the same way metal beads do. The flange must be fully embedded — a flange sitting proud of the render creates a hard line that will crack along its length. Fix with render dabs or mechanical fixings at close enough centres to hold the profile straight, check with a string line before the render sets, and lap the reinforcing mesh over the flange.

Can PVC beads be rendered over?
Yes — the perforated flanges key into the render the same way metal beads do. Ensure the render fully encapsulates the flange.
Is PVC suitable for external corners at ground level?
It works, but aluminium takes impact better. On high-traffic corners such as garage entries and pathways, metal is usually the more durable choice.
Does PVC go brittle over time?
Non-stabilised PVC will, under UV exposure. Use a UV-stabilised grade wherever the profile remains visible.
