Site leads and testing

Extension leads on a construction site require regular test and tag under NSW work health and safety regulations. Heavy-duty leads with moulded plugs survive site conditions far better than domestic leads, which fail at the plug and become a live hazard. Inspect leads visually before each use for cuts, crushing and exposed conductors.

Voltage drop and lead length

Long, thin leads cause voltage drop, and a tool running under-voltage draws more current and overheats. This is what burns out mixing drills and grinders that seem to be working fine. Use the shortest lead that reaches, in a heavy enough gauge for the tool's draw, and fully unwind leads from reels before use — a coiled lead under load generates real heat.

RCD protection

Portable RCDs are required on construction sites and are worth using on any job where power tools are being used around water or metalwork. Test the RCD with its test button at the start of each day, not just when it trips. An RCD that has never been tested cannot be assumed to work.

Task lighting

Poor lighting causes both accidents and defects — you cannot see a missed spot in a membrane coat or a lipped tile edge in bad light. LED site lights draw little power, run cool enough to work near, and are far more robust than halogen. Position lighting across a surface at a low angle when checking flatness of render or plaster; raking light shows every defect that flat light hides.

Frequently asked questions

What lead rating do I need for a mixing drill?
A 15A heavy-duty lead for high-draw tools, kept as short as practical. Long thin leads cause voltage drop that overheats motors.
Do leads need to be tagged?
On construction sites in NSW, yes. Check current SafeWork NSW requirements for testing intervals.
Should I unwind a lead from its reel?
Always, before drawing significant current. A coiled lead under load heats up and can melt its own insulation.
