The things that stop a job

Most site delays are not caused by the major materials. They are caused by running out of packers, string line, chalk or clean buckets. We keep the consumable lines deep so a single stop covers the whole list rather than sending you to three suppliers.

Marking and setting out

Chalk line colour matters more than it seems. Red and blue chalk are effectively permanent on porous surfaces and will show through paint and grout; white and yellow are far easier to remove. Use a removable chalk anywhere the mark will end up under a finish, and keep a separate line loaded with permanent chalk for rough structural setting out.

Buckets and mixing vessels

Keep dedicated buckets for adhesive, grout and water, and never mix a batch in a bucket with cured residue in it — the residue breaks loose as lumps that scratch tile faces and show as flecks in light-coloured grout. Flexible rubber tubs are worth having because cured material can be flexed out rather than chipped.

Ordering consumables sensibly

Consumables are cheap individually and expensive in lost time when they run out mid-job. Work out the consumable list at quoting stage alongside the materials, order a sensible surplus, and keep a restock list at the counter.
