Buying tools that survive daily use

There is a real difference between a homeowner tool and a trade tool, and it usually shows in the first month. Stainless trowels hold an edge and do not rust in a wet bucket; a proper skeleton caulking gun with a high thrust ratio will push a stiff polyurethane cartridge that a cheap gun simply cannot. We stock to the trade end of the range because that is what comes back to the counter less.

Consumables and blade selection

Diamond blade and abrasive selection follows the material. Hard, dense material needs a soft bond so the segments keep exposing fresh diamond; soft, abrasive material needs a hard bond so the segments do not wear away prematurely. Using a general-purpose blade on porcelain will glaze the blade and slow the cut to a crawl. Ask at the counter what you are actually cutting.

Safety gear

Cutting and grinding masonry, tile and concrete generates respirable crystalline silica. P2 respiratory protection, on-tool dust extraction or wet cutting are not optional under current NSW work health and safety requirements. We stock the masks, eye protection and hearing protection alongside the tools that create the hazard.

Cleaning and storage

Most trade tools are destroyed by neglect rather than use. Cement products left to cure on a trowel, notched edges worn down, cured polyurethane on a roller — all avoidable. Clean tools at the end of each pour or coat rather than the end of the day, keep a solvent container on site for the products that need it, and dry carbon steel tools before storing. A trowel cleaned properly lasts years; one left in a bucket overnight lasts a season.

Frequently asked questions

Which trowel notch size do I need?
It depends on tile size — broadly 6mm for small wall tile, 10mm for standard floor tile, 12mm or more for large format with back-buttering. Check coverage by lifting a tile early in the job.
Do you stock spare parts for caulking guns?
We carry common replacement plungers and nozzles for the gun ranges we stock. Call the store with the model to confirm.
Can I hire tools rather than buy?
We are a supply business rather than a hire company, but the counter staff can point you to what is worth owning versus hiring for a one-off job.
