Paper Rolls buying guide
Protecting finished floors
Newly tiled or coated floors need protection that breathes. Sealing a fresh floor under plastic traps moisture and can cause efflorescence, adhesive cure problems and staining. Use a breathable protection board or paper on anything cement-based that is still curing.
Choosing a protection material
Builders paper suits light foot traffic and paint drips. Corrugated board or hardboard is required where trades will be moving materials, using trestles or dropping tools — paper offers no impact protection at all. On stairs and traffic routes, use a self-adhesive film or taped board that will not slide underfoot, because a loose drop sheet on a stair is a genuine fall hazard.
Taping without damage
Protection is only useful if it stays in place, but the tape holding it down is what damages finishes. Never tape directly onto a fresh painted or coated surface. Tape protection to itself where possible, use a low-tack tape at the edges, and remove it as soon as the protection is no longer needed rather than leaving it for weeks.
Masking paper for spraying
Masking paper on a hand masker is far faster than sheeting for protecting windows, frames and skirting during spray work. Use a wider paper than feels necessary — overspray travels further than expected, particularly in a breeze — and check the coverage before starting rather than discovering the gap afterwards.
Frequently asked questions
- How long should a new tiled floor be protected?
- Through the remainder of the fit-out. Keep protection breathable for at least the first week while the adhesive and grout finish curing.
- Can I use plastic sheeting on a new floor?
- Not on a cement-based floor that is still curing — it traps moisture and can cause efflorescence and staining. Use a breathable material.
- What protects against heavy traffic?
- Corrugated board or hardboard rather than paper. Paper stops drips, not impacts.
