Corrosion grades

Fixing selection outdoors is a corrosion question. Class 3 galvanised is the minimum for general external use; coastal and pool environments need stainless, usually 316 rather than 304. A rusting fixing does not just fail — it stains the finish around it permanently, which on a rendered or tiled facade means far more than the cost of the screw.

Plasterboard anchors

Standard plastic plugs do not work in plasterboard — they spin in the hole. Use a proper hollow-wall anchor rated for the load, or better, fix into a stud or added nogging for anything carrying real weight. Wall-hung vanities, grab rails and TV brackets must go into structure, not into the sheet, regardless of what the anchor packaging claims.

Masonry anchors and edge distance

Expansion anchors work by pressing outward against the hole wall, so they need adequate material around them. Fixing too close to an edge or to a mortar joint causes the masonry to split, often not immediately but under later load. Follow the anchor's minimum edge distance and embedment depth, drill the hole to the correct diameter, and blow the dust out before inserting — dust in the hole significantly reduces holding power.

Bimetallic corrosion

Stainless fixings in direct contact with aluminium or galvanised steel set up galvanic corrosion in wet environments, which eats the softer metal around a perfectly intact screw. Where dissimilar metals meet outdoors, isolate them with a nylon washer or use a compatible fixing material. This shows up most often on coastal balustrade and cladding work.

Frequently asked questions

What fixing for fibre cement sheet?
Use fixings specifically rated for fibre cement with the correct head profile, at the manufacturer's edge distances and centres. Standard screws will break out the sheet edge.
Can I fix a wall-hung vanity to plasterboard?
No. It must be fixed into studs or purpose-installed noggings. Plasterboard anchors are not adequate for that load.
304 or 316 stainless?
316 for coastal, pool and marine environments. 304 is adequate for general external use away from salt.
