Basin Mixers buying guide

Height and basin type

A standard mixer over a counter-top basin will sit too low and splash. Match the spout height and reach to the basin — tall mixers for vessel basins, standard for inset and under-mount. Check the spout reaches past the basin's internal edge, or water runs down the outside and onto the vanity top.

Cartridges and serviceability

The ceramic disc cartridge is the part that eventually fails, usually as a drip or a stiff handle. Buying a brand with readily available replacement cartridges means a five-minute repair instead of replacing the whole mixer and disturbing the vanity top. Ask about cartridge availability when specifying — it is the single biggest factor in how long a mixer lasts in practice.

Water pressure and aerators

Mixers are designed for a pressure range, and Sydney mains pressure varies considerably by suburb and elevation. Very high pressure causes noise and premature cartridge wear, and may require a pressure-limiting valve. Aerators are also the first thing to block with debris after any plumbing work — they unscrew for cleaning, which resolves most complaints about poor flow on new installations.

Finish care

Matt black and brushed finishes are coatings rather than solid metal, and abrasive or acidic cleaners will cut through them. Clean with warm water and a soft cloth, dry after use to prevent water spotting, and keep bathroom sprays off the tapware. Most finish complaints on new tapware are cleaning damage rather than product faults, and they are not covered by warranty.

Frequently asked questions

What WELS rating should I look for?
Higher star ratings use less water. A 5 or 6 star basin mixer is common and may be required under some development consents.
Why is my new mixer flowing poorly?
Usually debris in the aerator from the plumbing work. Unscrew and rinse it before assuming a fault.
Can I clean matt black tapware with bathroom spray?
No. Acidic and abrasive cleaners damage the coating. Warm water and a soft cloth only.
