Segment bond and material

Hard, dense concrete needs a soft bond so segments wear and keep exposing fresh diamond. Soft or green concrete and abrasive render need a hard bond, or the wheel wears out in minutes. Getting this backwards is why a wheel either stops cutting or disappears unusually fast.

Dust control

Dry grinding concrete produces respirable crystalline silica at levels well above the workplace exposure standard. On-tool extraction with an M or H-class vacuum plus P2 respiratory protection is the minimum. This is enforced, and more importantly it is irreversible damage if ignored.

Segment shapes

Single-row cup wheels are aggressive and suited to bulk removal of coatings and high spots. Double-row wheels cut more slowly but leave a finer finish, which matters when the surface is about to be coated. Turbo and arrow-segment designs sit between the two and clear dust better. Match the wheel to whether you are removing material or preparing a finish.

Technique and wheel life

Let the wheel do the work at a moderate, consistent pressure — leaning on a grinder overheats the segments and burns the bond, which destroys the wheel far faster than it removes material. Keep the wheel moving in overlapping passes rather than dwelling in one place, and never use the edge of a cup wheel to gouge, which cracks segments off.

Can I use a diamond cup wheel on a standard angle grinder?
Yes, matched to the grinder size and speed rating. Always use the guard and check the maximum RPM printed on the wheel against the tool.
Why has my wheel stopped cutting?
It has glazed — the bond is too hard for the material. Dress it on an abrasive block to expose fresh diamond, or use a softer bond wheel.
Wet or dry grinding?
Wet controls dust best and extends wheel life, but is impractical indoors and with electric tools that are not rated for it. Dry with on-tool extraction is the usual site compromise.
