Drilling porcelain and glazed tile

Standard masonry bits will skate across a glazed surface and then crack the tile. Use a diamond-tipped tile bit, start at a shallow angle to break the glaze, run slow with no hammer action, and keep the bit cool with water. Hammer drilling porcelain is the fastest way to crack a finished wall.

SDS versus standard masonry bits

SDS bits transfer hammer energy far more efficiently and are the right choice for anything beyond occasional holes in masonry. A standard round-shank masonry bit in a hammer drill works for light fixings but will overheat and blunt quickly in concrete. For anything structural, or into a slab, SDS is faster and considerably less frustrating.

Drilling into reinforced concrete

Hitting reinforcement mid-hole will destroy a standard masonry bit. If a hole must go to depth, use a rebar cutter bit or relocate the hole. Never keep hammering against steel — it work-hardens the bit tip and can crack the surrounding concrete. Where the reinforcement position matters structurally, scan before drilling rather than finding it by feel.

Speed, pressure and cooling

Bigger diameters need lower speeds. Running a large bit at high speed burns the cutting edge, and once the temper is lost the bit will never cut properly again. Apply steady, moderate pressure and let the bit clear its own dust by withdrawing periodically. On metal, use cutting fluid; on tile and stone, water.
