Kitchen Sinks buying guide
Under-mount and benchtop material
Under-mount sinks give a seamless benchtop but require a benchtop material that can be sealed at the cut edge — stone and solid surface are fine, standard laminate is not. Top-mount suits laminate because the sink rim covers and seals the cut edge, which is why it remains the standard on laminate kitchens.
Stainless gauge and sound deadening
Lower gauge numbers mean thicker steel. Thin bowls drum under running water and dent more easily. Look for sound-deadening pads on the underside, which make a noticeable difference on a thin-gauge bowl. 304 stainless is the standard grade and resists staining well with normal care.
Bowl configuration
Single large bowls suit households washing oven trays and large pans and pair well with a dishwasher. Double bowls remain useful where hand washing and rinsing are separated, or where a disposal unit occupies one side. One-and-a-half bowl designs are a compromise that often satisfies neither use well — decide based on how the kitchen is actually used rather than on habit.
Cut-outs and support
The benchtop cut-out has to match the sink template exactly, and for under-mount installations the sink is supported by brackets or clips beneath the stone rather than by the rim. A large sink full of water is heavy, so support must be adequate and fixed into the cabinetry, not just adhered to the underside of the benchtop. Seal all exposed benchtop edges at the cut-out regardless of material.
Frequently asked questions
- Can an under-mount sink go into a laminate benchtop?
- Generally no — the exposed particleboard core will swell. Use a top-mount or a laminate specifically rated for under-mount installation.
- Stainless or granite composite?
- Stainless is more heat tolerant and easier to repair. Granite composite resists scratching and staining better and is quieter, but can be damaged by sudden heat.
- Why is my stainless sink rusting?
- Usually surface contamination from steel wool or from leaving cast iron cookware in the bowl, rather than the sink itself corroding. Clean with a stainless-safe product.
