Spout length

The spout must clear the bath or basin edge and deliver water well inside the rim. Measure from the finished wall face, accounting for tile build-up, before committing to a spout length. A spout that discharges onto the rim rather than into the bath causes constant splashing and eventually water damage at the junction.

Spout height above the rim

Set the spout high enough to fill a bath comfortably and to get a bucket underneath, but not so high that filling splashes. Around 150 to 200mm above the bath rim suits most installations. On basins, remember that Australian requirements include maintaining an air gap between the outlet and the flood level to prevent back-siphonage.

Mixer and spout alignment

The mixer and spout are separate components set into the wall at rough-in, and any misalignment between them is permanently visible. Set them out from a common datum with a level, and check both the horizontal alignment and the projection from the wall before the wall is closed. This is a five-minute check that prevents an obvious defect.

Finish matching

Buy the mixer and spout together as a matched set from the same batch. Brushed and matt finishes vary noticeably between production runs, and a spout ordered separately six weeks later frequently does not match the mixer beside it. This is far more visible in a bathroom than people expect.
