Aluminium Mouldings buying guide
Where aluminium suits
Aluminium gives a crisp, durable edge that will not chip like a rendered arris or a cut tile edge. It is the standard for external corners on rendered walls, balcony edge terminations and tiled step nosings. In coastal or pool environments, check the grade and finish — untreated aluminium will pit in a chlorinated or salt-laden atmosphere, and a mill-finish angle on a beachside balcony will look poor within a year.
Fixing and isolation
Aluminium in direct contact with fresh cement products can corrode from the alkalinity. Where a profile is bedded into render or adhesive, use a grade with a protective coating, or isolate it. Fix at appropriate centres and leave a small expansion allowance at joints on long runs — aluminium moves noticeably over a hot day, and a length fixed rigidly at both ends will bow.
Finishes and durability
Mill finish is the cheapest and is fine where the profile will be rendered or tiled over. Anodised finishes give far better corrosion resistance and a consistent appearance where the edge stays visible. Powder-coated profiles allow colour matching to joinery or window frames, but the coating is only as good as its handling — a scratch through to bare metal in a coastal environment becomes a corrosion site, so store and cut profiles carefully and touch up any damage.
Cutting and mitring
Cut aluminium with a fine-tooth blade designed for non-ferrous metal, not a masonry blade. Deburr the cut edge before installation — a burr will telegraph through render and is a cut hazard on an exposed tile nosing. Mitre external corners rather than butting them; a butted external corner on a visible arris never looks right and leaves an open joint that collects water.
Frequently asked questions
- What lengths are stocked?
- Most profiles are stocked in 2.5m and 3m lengths. Call the store to confirm availability on specific profiles before making a trip.
- Will aluminium corrode against render?
- Uncoated aluminium can be attacked by the alkalinity of fresh cement. Use a coated or anodised grade where the profile is embedded, or isolate it with a suitable barrier.
- Can aluminium trims be used around a pool?
- Only marine-grade or properly anodised profiles. Chlorinated and salt environments will pit standard aluminium quickly — stainless or PVC is often the better choice.
