Flow rate and pressure

High-star WELS shower heads restrict flow, which is generally good but can disappoint on a low-pressure gravity-fed system. Where mains pressure is low, choose a head designed to perform at lower pressure rather than assuming a rain head will work. A large overhead head on inadequate pressure produces a weak, cold-feeling shower.

Rail showers versus fixed

A rail shower with a handheld is far more practical for cleaning the shower, washing children and pets, and for accessibility. A fixed head looks cleaner and has fewer components to fail. Many installations use both, with a diverter, which gives the best of each at the cost of a more complex rough-in.

Cleaning and mineral build-up

Most complaints about a shower head weakening over time come down to mineral deposits blocking the outlets. Heads with silicone nozzles can be rubbed clean with a thumb, which is why they have become standard. For metal-faced heads, soaking in a descaling solution restores flow. Advise clients on this at handover — it prevents a service call for a non-fault.

Height and positioning

Set the head high enough for the tallest user to stand under comfortably, generally around 2000 to 2100mm to the outlet, and angled so the spray lands in the middle of the shower rather than on the screen. For an overhead rain head, the position needs to be set at rough-in and cannot be adjusted afterwards, so mark it out on site with the client rather than working to a standard dimension.
