Sealing penetrations

Every pipe through a waterproofed floor is a potential leak path. Puddle flanges and penetration collars give the membrane a horizontal surface to bond to around the pipe rather than trying to seal against a vertical round face. Bed the collar, bandage over the flange, and build the membrane up over it. A membrane simply turned up the side of a pipe with no flange is the most common single-point failure in a wet area.

Solvent cement joints

PVC solvent welding is a chemical weld, not a glue joint, and it depends on both surfaces being cleaned with the correct priming fluid first. Apply primer to socket and spigot, apply cement to both, insert with a quarter turn, and hold until the initial set takes. Rushing the hold or skipping the primer produces a joint that looks fine and leaks under pressure later, buried in a wall.

Falls and pipe sizing

Drainage relies on the right grade — too flat and solids settle, too steep and water outruns the solids, which causes the same blockage from the other direction. NSW plumbing requirements set minimum grades by pipe size. Get the falls set and checked before the screed goes in, because correcting a drainage grade after tiling means removing the floor.

Coordinating with the waterproofer

Penetration position drives the waterproofing detail. Pipes set too close to a wall or to each other leave no room to properly bandage and build up the membrane around each one. Where possible, keep penetrations at least 100mm clear of junctions and of one another. A five-minute conversation at rough-in stage prevents the compromised detailing that causes leaks.

Frequently asked questions

Do I still need to seal around a puddle flange?
Yes — the flange is a substrate for the membrane, not a seal in itself. Bandage and membrane must run over the flange and onto the floor.
Can I use a rubber grommet instead of a puddle flange?
Only where the waterproofing system specifically allows it. Most AS 3740 compliant systems require a bonded flange with the membrane carried over it.
Is solvent cement required, or can I use a push-fit?
Concealed drainage in wet areas is normally solvent welded. Push-fit connections are generally limited to accessible locations where they can be inspected and maintained.
