Waste and tap pairing

Most counter-top basins have no tap hole and no overflow, which means they need a pop-up waste without overflow and either a tall mixer or a wall-mounted spout. Fitting a standard overflow waste to a basin without an overflow will leak through the overflow slot in the waste body.

Height and ergonomics

A vessel basin sits entirely above the benchtop, adding its full height to the working level. On a standard 900mm vanity a tall basin puts the rim uncomfortably high. Either lower the vanity carcass to compensate or choose a semi-inset or shallower basin. Working this out on paper before ordering avoids the most common complaint about vessel basins.

Sealing to the benchtop

The junction between basin and benchtop is a permanent wet joint. Bed the basin on a neutral cure silicone, tool the joint cleanly, and avoid acetic silicone entirely on stone tops. Water sitting at an unsealed or poorly tooled junction eventually gets into the benchtop substrate, which on anything other than solid stone means swelling and failure.

Material and cleaning

Glazed ceramic is the most forgiving surface and resists staining well. Matt and stone composite basins look excellent but are more porous and show soap and mineral deposits sooner, particularly in hard water areas. They also mark with abrasive cleaners. If low maintenance is the priority, a glazed ceramic basin is the practical choice.
