Power Tools buying guide
Mixing drills
Mixing tile adhesive, render or self-levelling compound needs a low-speed, high-torque mixer, not a standard drill. Running a normal drill at high speed whips air into the mix, which reduces strength and leaves pinholes in a self-leveller. A proper mixer with a variable-speed trigger and the right paddle is the single most worthwhile power tool purchase for a tiler or renderer.
Angle grinders and guards
Angle grinders cause a disproportionate share of serious site injuries, almost always with the guard removed. Keep the guard on and positioned between the wheel and the operator, use the side handle, and let the wheel reach full speed before contact. Check discs for cracks before fitting and respect the expiry date on bonded abrasive discs — they degrade and can shatter.
Corded versus battery
Battery platforms have closed most of the performance gap and remove the lead-management problem on site. The exception is sustained high-draw work — long mixing sessions, continuous grinding — where corded tools still run cooler and do not stop mid-task. If buying into a battery platform, standardise across the crew so batteries and chargers are interchangeable.
Maintenance
Cement dust is what kills site power tools. Blow out vents regularly, keep tools out of the dust when not in use, and check brushes on corded tools before they fail. A tool that runs hot or smells of burning is telling you the vents are blocked or the brushes are gone — running it to destruction is far more expensive than a service.
Frequently asked questions
- What paddle for self-levelling compound?
- A helical or basket paddle designed to mix without introducing air. Spiral paddles that lift the mix upward will aerate a self-leveller.
- What speed should I mix adhesive at?
- Slow — usually under 500 rpm. High speed introduces air and heats the mix, both of which reduce strength.
- Do power tools on site need testing and tagging?
- In NSW, electrical equipment on construction sites requires regular test and tag. Check the current SafeWork NSW requirements for intervals.
