Wall thickness and breech

Wall mixers have a limited adjustment range for finished wall thickness. Tile plus adhesive plus render adds up quickly — if the build-up exceeds the mixer's range, the handle will not sit against the wall or the body will not reach. Confirm the total build-up before the mixer body is set, and give the plumber a figure rather than a guess.

Extension kits

Where the wall build-up turns out deeper than the mixer allows, extension kits are available for most brands and are the correct fix. What is not acceptable is packing the trim out with spacers and silicone, which leaves the spindle unsupported and eventually causes a leak inside the wall. Order the extension kit for the specific mixer rather than improvising.

Tempering and safety

Regulations require hot water delivered to bathroom outlets to be limited to a safe temperature, achieved with a tempering valve at the hot water unit. A mixer alone does not provide this. Where scalding risk is a particular concern, a thermostatic mixer adds a second layer of control by holding the set temperature through pressure fluctuations.

Serviceability

The cartridge is the wear part and will eventually need replacing. Choose a brand with cartridges readily available in Australia, and note the model somewhere the owner can find it. A wall mixer whose cartridge cannot be sourced means opening a tiled wall to replace the whole body, which is a large job to solve a dripping shower.
