Set-out and rough-in

Back-to-wall pans are sensitive to the set-out dimension from the finished wall to the waste centre. Confirm it against the specific pan before the plumber sets the drainage, because the tolerance is small and a pan that will not sit back against the wall is a visible fault that cannot be hidden.

Concealed versus close-coupled

A concealed cistern gives a cleaner line and frees up floor space but requires a stud wall or duct deep enough to house it, plus an accessible inspection panel for the inlet valve. Close-coupled is simpler, cheaper and easier to service, and remains the practical choice on most renovations where the wall depth is fixed.

Finished wall thickness

The set-out dimension is measured to the finished wall face, not the framing or the substrate. Tile plus adhesive typically adds 10 to 15mm, and render more. Getting this wrong is the most common reason a pan ends up with a gap behind it. Give the plumber the total build-up figure at rough-in and confirm it again before the pan is fitted.

Flushing performance and water use

Higher WELS star ratings mean lower flush volume, which is good for water use but relies on the drainage having adequate fall to carry solids. On a long run with minimal fall, a very low-volume flush can cause recurring blockages. Where the drainage is marginal, discuss the flush volume with the plumber rather than defaulting to the highest rating available.

Can I access a concealed cistern for repairs?
Yes, through the flush plate aperture, which is designed as the access point. The inlet valve and flush valve are both serviceable through it.
Is a back-to-wall pan harder to install?
Not harder, but far less forgiving on set-out. The drainage position has to be right before the walls are lined.
