Recessed or surface mounted

Recessed cabinets give a flush finish but need a cavity clear of studs and services at the right height — plan it before lining. Surface mounted is far simpler on a retrofit and avoids opening the wall, at the cost of projecting into the room.

Fixing mirrors safely

Use a mirror-specific neutral cure adhesive; solvent-based adhesives attack the silvering and cause the black edge creep seen on failed mirrors. Apply in vertical beads with gaps for air circulation rather than full coverage, and support the bottom edge mechanically until the adhesive has fully cured. On a large mirror, mechanical clips are worth using regardless of the adhesive.

Lighting and placement

A single downlight above a mirror throws shadows straight onto the face, which is exactly wrong for shaving or makeup. Light from both sides at roughly face height gives even illumination. Where only overhead lighting is possible, an integrated LED mirror or cabinet solves it. Plan the electrical rough-in around this, because adding a light beside a mirror afterwards means opening a tiled wall.

Moisture and edge protection

Mirror edges are where moisture attacks the silvering. Sealed or polished edges hold up considerably better than raw cut edges in a bathroom, and a mirror sitting directly against a wet tiled wall with no ventilation gap will deteriorate at the bottom edge first. Leave a small gap behind the mirror and avoid trapping water at the base.
